Mrs Joanne Crosby
Senior School Principal
Mrs Joanne Crosby was awarded her B.Sc Honours in Biochemistry from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1978. Her initial objective was to follow a career in medical research. After doing research on red blood cells for a year, she realised that research was not her calling.
She was appointed as a Mathematics and Science teacher in 1979 and completed her Higher Diploma in Education during her first year as a teacher.
Over the past 41 years, Mrs Crosby has taught Physical Science, Mathematics and Accounting; managed Physical Science, Life Sciences and Mathematics departments; lectured at the Lesotho Teachers’ Training College; published a Grade 12 Physical Science study guide; set final Grade 12 Physical Science papers for the Gauteng Department of Education; spent 7 years as Deputy Principal of a government school, and been Principal of the Senior School at St Catherine’s for 12 years.
She is passionate about the people who she encounters daily and enjoys sharing her knowledge, wisdom and experience with others. She keeps abreast of the trends in education which she evaluates and tries to incorporate into the educational philosophy implemented by St Catherine’s.
Mrs Crosby relaxes while walking, gardening and using her creativity in designing unique quilts. Reading is reserved for the holidays when her mind isn’t preoccupied with school matters. One of her favourite quotes is by Confucius who said, “Before you can do what you want to do, you always have to do something else”.
