About Miss Laura Barrow
Miss Barrow is an English teacher in the Senior School, teaching Grades 10, 11 and 12. She has taught at St Catherine’s since 1995, first as an Art teacher and then as an English teacher, teaching from Grade 6 to Grade 12 at various points. Her family has had a long association with the school. Her mother and sister-in-law were fellow teachers, and her sister, her sister’s children and her own son attended the school. Her son, Raymond, was Head Boy of the Preparatory School in 2013.
She has a BA in English and Classical Civilisation from the University of the Witwatersrand and an H.E.D. from UNISA. She loves art and art history, and has always been involved in the cultural life of the school. At present, she runs the Art Club and is involved with Public Speaking.
However, most importantly, she believes that the English classroom should be a forum for discussion on all issues – social, artistic, philosophical and political. It should be a safe space for pupils to express their views, grow the nuance and depth of their worldviews and develop their critical thinking skills.
In her spare time, Miss Barrow dabbles in art and is an avid collector of antique jewellery.
